There has been great amount of concern about environmental toxins on the reproductive health of both men and women. Plastics for example may contain bisphenol A (BPA), which acts as an endocrine disruptor and may contain other harmful materials such as mercury and pesticides.
BPA can act similar to estrogen and other hormones in the body. This can lead to abnormal stimulation of reproductive tissue and suppression of our own natural hormones.
Exposure to these toxins can lead to:
- Low birth weight babies
- Menstrual abnormalities
- Low sperm count
- Cancers of reproductive organs
- Menstrual disorders
Since these harmful agents may be found in everyday products, its imperative to be aware of their dangers and to read labels when buying new products. One of the ways to improve reproductive health is to take natural supplements. Ashwagandha has been taken for thousands of years as an herbal remedy for sexual dysfunction. In Preclinical studies, it has been found to increase semen quality by decreasing oxidative stress. It also increases the enzymatic activity of seminal fluids. In females, ashwagandha improves LH and FSH hormones responsible for ovulation.
A couple should seek medical evaluation for infertility if they haven’t conceived after one year of regular unprotected intercourse.
Ashwagandha is found in dry hot climates like the Mediterranean, Northern Africa, India, and Egypt. Different parts of the plant are used for specific ailments. The root is thought to contain the most benefits with regards to reproductive health. In a study by Shukla and group, men took ashwagandha root for 3 months and the parameters for sperm count, motility had improved due to less sperm dying prematurely and having less oxidative stress. The levels of copper, zinc, iron and gold had also increased in the seminal fluid leading to higher sperm quality. In two other clinical trials, ashwagandha improved fertility in men after 3 months of use by improving essential amino acids, Vitamin C, E and A. It also decreases the levels of stress hormone cortisol in the sperm, helping improve sperm quality.
Married healthy women were able to increase their sexual function after using ashwagandha. The active components in ashwagandha including withanolides, steroidal lactones are said to be responsible for its therapeutic effects. There have been limitations in the studies looking at ashwagandha and its effect on sexual health including small study design, short study duration and small number of subjects. The positive effects of ashwagandha on sexual health may be due to its effect on stress reduction and its effect on male and female hormones.
